Backrooms (2026) Plot Summary

In Backrooms (2026), a struggling furniture store owner named Clark stumbles into a hidden, impossible world behind reality: an endless maze of yellow rooms, buzzing fluorescent lights, and empty corridors that defy logic. Based on the viral internet horror phenomenon, the film follows those who enter the expansive labyrinth that distorts time, memory, and identity. As Kane Parsons’s directorial debut, Backrooms blends liminal-space horror, sci-fi mystery, and psychological dread into a surreal story about isolation, disorientation, and the terror of being trapped in a place that feels familiar but wrong.

Who Will Enjoy Backrooms?

Fans of psychological horror, particularly stories built around liminal spaces, will appreciate this one. Those who prefer fast-paced or gore-driven horror may find it too slow and restrained.

Watch if:

  • You enjoy liminal-space horror built around atmosphere, isolation, and architectural dread.
  • You value mood, sound design, and visual unease over action.
  • You’re open to internet-horror concepts and slower buildup.
  • You don’t need frequent jump scares or traditional monster-driven horror to stay engaged.
  • You’re interested in abstract horror that leaves room for interpretation.

Skip if:

  • You prefer horror with clear rules, fast pacing, and direct explanations.
  • You need a tightly structured story with conventional character arcs, clear background, and resolution.
  • You get frustrated by ambiguous worldbuilding or intentionally disorienting settings.
  • You’re looking for a straightforward survival thriller.
  • You dislike slow-burn genre films that prioritize atmosphere over action.

Backrooms Mini Review

Backrooms is an exemplary addition to liminal-space horror, and Kane Parsons defies skepticism with his directorial debut. This is found footage at its finest, fully utilizing disorienting perspectives, movement, and angles to build atmospheric dread. Crucially, Parsons nails the overwhelming sense of foreboding the film hinges upon.

From start to finish, the vision is apparent. The material world is populated yet distinctly wrong, as if conceived by an entity that knows what something is but lacks any concept of why. The climax features some utterly disturbing imagery and high-impact survival horror made increasingly intense by the eerie labyrinth it takes place in.

Though Renate Reinsve feels slightly miscast, she’s still perfectly serviceable as Mary the therapist. Chiwetel Ejiofor, on the other hand, completely steals the show with his wholly electric performance.

The areas in which the film suffers can likely be attributed to a lack of experience. Some of the early exploration is dreadfully slow and unnecessarily repetitive, relying heavily on atmosphere to carry a sparse narrative.

The script ultimately leaves too much up to interpretation, and as a result, Backrooms doesn’t entirely succeed as a standalone film. Instead, it feels more like an introduction to a larger series. Without context from internet lore or post-production interviews, it all feels a little up in the air.

Nonetheless, Backrooms is an intriguing watch and a compelling gateway into internet culture as inspiration for formal entertainment.
