As a sequel, Ready or Not 2 succeeds where many fail; it’s a true continuation of the story that feels natural and expansive. Grace’s identity, for instance, becomes more defined as we learn that she’s always done what she felt was necessary to survive.
Her sister Faith is both a warranted and welcome addition. Their sibling dynamic introduces a chaotic teamwork element that enriches and evolves the series, and the chemistry between the two leads is strong.
Moreover, the writers smartly juxtapose the sisters with the Danforth twins, adding nuance that gives the film some depth and weight. Of course, the focus remains on the violence and chaotic fight for survival, but these details—along with eat-the-rich themes—help it stand out in an ocean of thoughtless horror tropes.
Though some of the fight scenes feel a little dragged out, the ending is appropriately camp. And while the plot isn’t bulletproof, it isn’t quite as riddled as the first film. Fans of the original’s game-centric, devil-worshipping backdrop will find this sequel equally, if not more, entertaining.
