Over Your Dead Body Mini Review

Coming from The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone, it’s no surprise that humor takes center stage in this remake of The Trip, a Norwegian horror film. The BriTANicK writing duo takes the original screenplay and dials up the levity, turning subtle satire into a more overtly witty and outrageous trip.

And it is, without a doubt, deviously funny. As the follow-up to their directorial debut, Pizza Movie, Brian McElhaney and Nick Kocher demonstrate a clear command of comedy, pairing it flexibly with different genres.

If comedy is the lettuce, then Samara Weaving and Jason Segel are the dressing that elevates this thriller salad. Their back-and-forth chemistry forms the film’s backbone and lends credibility to their relationship’s trajectory, an area where the original struggles. In fact, lead and supporting actors alike bring palpable energy to their roles, including a wickedly enjoyable performance from Paul Guilfoyle.

Unfortunately, this is one of those films where the more you think about it, the more its shortcomings come to light. Some of the excess could’ve been trimmed near the end, and it remains debatable whether the exaggerated characterization and lack of authenticity ultimately work in the film’s favor.

The protagonists are essentially full-on caricatures. Lisa doesn’t just lack depth; she’s diminished to a damsel in distress who just wants to be “loved and provided for.” Meanwhile, Dan evolves from a cowardly pushover into some kind of heroic protector shaped by the “art of war.” It’s giving midlife crisis meets trad-wife fantasy.

That said, it’s an undeniably entertaining watch and stands as one of the funniest dark comedy thrillers of 2026 thus far. Just don’t think about it too much, and revel in what really is a veritably hilarious script.
