The sequel in the Super Mario cinematic universe takes all the strengths and weaknesses of the first movie and amplifies them. The plot is an inconsequential mess, but it’s undeniably fun to watch these lovable characters interact within an expanded, more imaginative world.
To that end, Matthew Fogel solidifies his position as a commercial storyteller. Though he excels at capturing the tone and iconography of the source material, he clearly struggles with compelling storytelling. These films would benefit hugely from a secondary writer focused on crafting the main narrative and plot points.
In some ways, it’s admirable. Similar to the Avatar and Tron franchises, Super Mario is devoted to the visual experience. There are some genuinely creative scenes that do nothing to move the plot but are very immersive and engaging. I highly recommend seeing this one in 3D or IMAX; otherwise, much of its appeal is lost.
Ultimately, I enjoyed this more than the first because it fully commits to world-building and spectacle. Both movies have terribly weak plots, so you might as well take them for what they are and enjoy some stunning animation.
Despite its flaws, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is solid, family-friendly fun. And if you liked the first movie, you’ll likely enjoy this one as well.
