Who Will Enjoy Hoppers?

Viewers looking for a light, family-friendly animated adventure with a clear message and playful tone will find plenty to enjoy. Those expecting sharper humor or deeper storytelling may find it a bit too straightforward.

Watch if:

  • You enjoy fun, family-friendly animated adventures.
  • You value clear moral messaging and stories about standing up for a cause.
  • You’re open to a story that simplifies rather than complicates its ideas.
  • You don’t need characters to be especially memorable to stay engaged.
  • You’re interested in all-ages enter-tainment with refreshing animation.

Skip if:

  • You prefer narrative subtext or more layered, adult-oriented humor.
  • You need a strong central duo or ensemble to stay engaged.
  • You get frustrated by underdeveloped characters or kid-friendly tones.
  • You’re looking for sharper humor or complex plot structure.
  • You dislike familiar or predictable plot points.

Hoppers Mini Review

As much as I wanted to love Hoppers, I found myself merely entertained. Which is puzzling, because it has all the ingredients of a Pixar staple—and the box office suggests as much—but something feels like it’s missing.

If I try to pinpoint it, it comes down to a lack of spirit and connectivity. Maple spends much of the film navigating the stakes alone (is this befitting of children growing up during the loneliness epidemic?), and while several supporting characters are enjoyable, none carry the charm or dynamic presence of Pixar’s best; Sulley has Mike, Nemo has Dory, Ember has Wade, and Joy has an entire ensemble of standout sidekicks.

King George is warm and likable, but his relationship with Maple doesn’t organically develop, and he isn’t given enough time to shine as an independent character. The film prioritizes action, pacing, and messaging, leaving little room for the subtler moments that build emotional attachment and get viewers truly invested. The result is a subtle disconnect that keeps Hoppers from being truly memorable.

Where it does shine is in its premise and ideas, which feel original and engaging from a sci-fi standpoint (especially for a family film). The animation is also strong and expressive. It’s still an enjoyable watch with meaningful messaging for younger audiences, but that missing sense of personality and humor (albiet a few very genuinely funny moments) keeps it from being something greater.
